Best English-Language Article in Korean History
The Chosŏn History Society will recognize one peer-reviewed article on Korean history published in an English-language academic journal every year through the "Best English-Language Article in Korean History." Factors under consideration include the article's 1) soundness and rigor of research 2) potential impact on future intellectual directions, 3) novelty of its insights on Korea's past, 4) its accessibility to non-specialists. Finalists are nominated by the Prize Committee and the awardee to be recognized is selected by CHS member vote.
The award entails a cash prize of $300 to be disbursed to the author(s) of the recognized article.
Eligibility
- Article must be published in English in a recognized, peer-reviewed academic journal
- Article must be published in between July and June of the prior academic year as customarily defined in the United States. I.e. the 2025 prize will be issued for articles formally published between July 2024 and June 2025.
- Articles engage in original, source-based research.
- Articles can be written by authors in any academic discipline (e.g. history, art history, literature, archaeology, sociology, political science, environmental studies., etc) so long as the main research question addresses issues pertaining to Korea's past.
Nomination and Selection Process
- A committee of five individuals each nominates one article for consideration by the CHS membership.
- All current CHS members are eligible to vote.
- Voting for "Best Article" will be conducted via a ranked-choice process.
- Only one article may be awarded.
Committee Selection and Roles
- Committee members are invited by the Chosŏn History Society Board
- A committee chair is appointed by the Chosŏn History Society Board
- A committee member shall serve 2-year terms
Timeline
The first prize will be for the Academic Year of 2024–2025 (E.g. for 2025 Prize)
- January 1st, '26: Committee Chair solicits nominations from committee members
- February 1st 26: Committee Chair creates ballot with nominated articles and provides access to the articles to CHS members
- March 1st, '26: Members evaluate and vote for "Best Article"
- March 15th, 26: Awardee announced and recognized
