Sara McAdory-Kim is an editor who manages two public health journals alongside work for individual and institutional clients in Asian studies and beyond.
After studying TESOL and journalism in college in Mississippi, she moved to Seoul to teach in an English immersion program. Later, she earned an MA in comparative education from the Institute of Education in London (now IOE at UCL), where she focused on Irish Gaelic immersion education. Determined to learn a language through immersion herself, she returned to Seoul and enrolled in a master’s program taught in Korean. It sort of worked.
Back in the States, Sara became a full-time editor. As a copyeditor, Sara specializes in working in Asia- and particularly Korea-related topics, from sovereignty and jurisdiction in Choson borderlands to the effects of heat waves in modern-day jjokbang. She has also checked romanization of Korean for several books from Michigan Press. As a managing editor, Sara manages the workflow for about 2,500 submitted manuscripts annually in preventive medicine and public health.
She’s still perfecting her Korean, these days through daily use with her two young sons.
